529 Plan,

IRS — 529 Plans: Questions and Answers

다만 Form 709 filing이 필요하거나 donor의 lifetime gift and estate tax exclusion을 사용하게 될 수 있다.

일정한 computer expenses와 special-needs services도 포함될 수 있고, eligible student가 at least half-time이면 일정 한도 안에서 room and board도 qualified expense가 될 수 있다.

그 밖에도 현재 federal law는 registered apprenticeship expenses, 일정한 qualified student-loan repayment, elementary and secondary education expenses, 그리고 qualified postsecondary credentialing expenses를 529의 qualified use로 인정할 수 있다.

또 taxable years beginning after December 31, 2025에는 한 beneficiary에 대한 K–12 관련 cash distributions가 모든 qualified tuition programs를 합쳐 연간 $20,000까지로 확대됐다.

Qualified postsecondary credentialing expenses

Beneficiary

다만 new beneficiary가 prior beneficiary와 다른 generation에 있다면 gift tax 또는 generation-skipping transfer tax 문제가 생길 수 있다.

26 U.S.C. §529 — Qualified Tuition Programs

529-to-Roth IRA rollover

California는 529 contribution에 대한 state income-tax deduction을 제공하지 않는다.

K–12 expenses

California는 federal의 elementary and secondary education용 529 treatment에 conform하지 않는다.

Postsecondary credentialing expenses

Apprenticeship과 student-loan repayment

반면 California는 taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2021부터 registered apprenticeship expenses와 qualified education loan의 principal 또는 interest payment에 관한 earlier federal 529 expansion에는 conform한다.

529-to-Roth IRA rollover

다른 주는 resident에게 state deduction이나 credit 같은 incentive를 주는 경우가 있기 때문에 home-state plan 여부가 세금상 중요할 수 있다.

다만 각 plan의 fees, investment choices, age-based portfolio, administrative features는 다를 수 있다.

IRS — 529 Plans: Questions and Answers

529.

Flexible savings.
