Self-employed taxpayer

3. Temporary-work-location rule

Mileage rate

  • 한 client에서 다른 client로 이동;
  • client site에서 showroom으로 이동;
  • showroom에서 supplier로 이동;
  • office에서 customer meeting으로 이동;

집 밖에 하나 이상의 regular work location이 있다면, 같은 trade or business의 temporary work location으로 집에서 직접 이동하는 비용은 일반적으로 deductible business transportation이 될 수 있다.

Regular work location이 있는가?

Home office가 principal place of business로 인정된다면, 그 home office와 같은 trade or business의 다른 work location 사이의 이동은 일반적으로 deductible business transportation이 될 수 있다.

Home office

3. Business stop

Home office → Client → Tile showroom → Fabric vendor → Home office

Office → Client A → Client B → Office

IRS Announcement 2026-11은 2026년 7월 1일 이후 paid or incurred 된 deductible business transportation expense에 대해 rate를 76¢로 올렸다.

  • 1월부터 6월까지 business miles 1,000;
  • 7월부터 12월까지 business miles 1,000.

1,000 × $0.725 = $725

그리고

1,000 × $0.76 = $760

$1,485

  • gas와 oil;
  • maintenance와 repairs;
  • tires;
  • insurance;
  • vehicle registration;
  • depreciation;
  • lease payments.

Mileage rate + gas receipts

Actual vehicle expenses

  • gas와 oil;
  • insurance;
  • repairs와 maintenance;
  • tires;
  • registration과 licenses;
  • lease payments;
  • depreciation;
  • parking과 tolls.

12,000 miles

business miles가 4,800

이라면 business-use percentage는:

40%

Method choice

Actual method로 바꾸면 일반적으로 remaining estimated useful life 동안 straight-line depreciation을 사용해야 하고, applicable Section 280F depreciation limitation도 적용된다.

9. Mileage log

  • 날짜;
  • business destination;
  • business purpose;
  • 각 business use의 mileage;
  • 연간 total mileage;

Mileage-tracking app

Spreadsheet

Business mileage

FTB Publication 984

1. actual vehicle expenses;

2. applicable federal standard mileage rate.

  • 연초와 연말 odometer reading;
  • business mileage log;
  • 각 business trip의 날짜와 destination;
  • 간단한 business purpose;
  • parking과 toll receipts;
  • 연간 total mileage;
  • purchase 또는 lease documents;
  • actual method를 사용하거나 비교할 경우 underlying vehicle expenses;
  • 필요한 경우 prior depreciation schedules;

Regular work location도 없고 qualifying home office도 없다면, 평소 metropolitan area 안의 temporary business location으로 집에서 이동하는 것은 일반적으로 commuting이다.

Route, work location, temporary-work-location rule,
